Friday 30th September 2022 : Alice Sheppard Fidler
A day performing alternative drawing

11am-4pm : The Hide Artist Retreat, GL5 5JJ
6 Spaces - suitable for all adults

"I prefer to see with closed eyes." Josef Albers

There is no set outcome for the one day workshop on drawing.
We will be responding to light, sound, movement, darkness and touch in a playful and experimental approach to mark making.… a whole body experience working standing, walking sitting, lying…

Sheppard Fidler works across installation, sculpture and performance. Her conceptual art practice utilises and transforms found and recycled materials and spaces to navigate often fragile and imperceptible boundaries between place, human experience and states of being.  Her site-specific approach often operates outside of the gallery context, responding to the available, universal, on-hand resources that each new project offers.

Sunday 16th October 2022 : Ann-Margreth Bohl
A day of mindful engagement with gravity

11am-4pm : The Hide Artist Retreat, GL5 5JJ
6 Spaces - suitable for all adults

But what is the point of soft without hard or weight without lightness’     - Isamu Noguchi

On this day course, you are invited to cut, rip, rub, chip, hang, burry and tangle, playing with inherent material qualities of stone and paper.

Based in Stroud, Gloucestershire, Ann-Margreth works in stone, metal, sound and beeswax.
She’s interested in light, shadow and the passing of time. Her work includes monumental sculptures which are time pieces: they cast a complex and changing series of shadows. Like modern ‘Stonehenges’, they’re precisely aligned with the sun as it moves across the sky.

PAST EVENTS

: Rebecca Stapleford
A day exploring origin stories using Somatic techniques

11am-4pm : The Hide Artist Retreat, GL5 5JJ
6 Spaces - suitable for all adults

In this workshop we will be moving through our linages; reclaiming the tools of song and dance to activate memories and illustrate stories. Using the body, rhythm and sound we will unpick our sense of belonging and discover our contemporary ceremonies.

You, sent out beyond your recall, go to the limits of your longing.
Embody me. Flare up like a flame and make big shadows I can move in.
Rainer Maria Rilke

Stapleford’s practice explores the physicality of storytelling and body memories. Occupying spaces outside of art venues, places of worship, empty buildings and public spaces, she examines subtle gestures and audible experiences. Her work questions gender roles, the everyday and the overlooked.

She is the former Live Words and Music curator, Whitechapel Gallery. Works include: Crowning and Drive Thru Wet Nurse, Metamorphosis 2017, In-Between Two Sounds, Walthamstow Quaker Meeting House, 2010. Collaborations include Other Places with James Porter Site Festival 2016, Triad and Body Chandelier with choreographer Marguerite Caruanagalizia, Place Theater London 2008.

Sunday 7th August 2022 : Alice Sheppard Fidler
A day of slow consideration through clay

11am-4pm : The Hide Artist Retreat, GL5 5JJ
6 Spaces - suitable for all adults

This workshop will take place predominantly in the garden at The Hide, using local, natural materials.
Over the course of the day we will be adopting the Japanese art form of making 'mud dumplings' in which earth and water are moulded and shaped by hand, then carefully polished to create a delicate shiny sphere. The process requires hours and careful focus so as not to break the ball. We will use this meditative process to connect to our surroundings and our breath giving us a way in to simply be present.

Friday 5th August 2022 : Emily Lucas
A day of play and experimenting with printing inks

11am-4pm : The Hide Artist Retreat, GL5 5JJ
6 Spaces - suitable for all adults

Monoprint for Drawing
Come and experiment with relief inks, making mono-printed coloured backgrounds in the morning on which to draw and print onto in the afternoon.  This is a non-technical, one-day course, where participants will have an opportunity to play with colour, texture, surface and line using relief printing inks and the etching press. No drawing skills are necessarily required – just the willingness to be inventive and have a go.

Emily studied Drawing and Applied Arts at UWE in Bristol and continued with a Multi-Disciplinary Printmaking MA.  She is currently undertaking a PhD in drawing.  She has exhibited her work in London, Poland, Greece and Hong Kong and regularly has work in the RWA Open in Bristol.  Her work is held in both private and public collections.
